Stephen Houseal has a wealth of experience. Raised in St. Joseph, Michigan, he has been a resident of Midland for over twenty-five years. Steve is active in the community, having coached youth soccer and baseball and been a cub scout leader. He is a member of St. Brigid of Kildare parish, where he serves on the Christian Service Commission.

He received his Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Juris Doctor degrees from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Steve is a member of Xi Sigma Pi Forestry Honors Society and was named a Joseph L. Sax Fellow for Legal and Environmental Studies. He was a Graduate Teaching Assistant for Environmental Policy in the University of Michigan’s School of Natural Resources.

Admitted to the bar in 1989, he worked for The Dow Chemical Company as an environmental attorney, in private practice representing multiple clients including Dow Corning Corporation, and served over eleven years as magistrate and deputy court administrator for the 75th District Court. In his role as magistrate, he presided over more than 17,000 traffic and civil small-claims cases, and dealt with thousands of criminal matters. He is admitted to practice in Michigan and to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, and is a member of the State Bar Association of Michigan and the Midland Bar Association. He is endorsed by the United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA) and a part of USCCA’s national attorney network.

Not only an expert in the laws regarding firearms and personal protection, Steve Houseal is a firearms expert and former competitive handgun shooter. Teaching firearms law since 1998, Steve is an NRA-certified instructor in Basic Pistol, Rifle and Shotgun; Home Firearm Safety; Personal Protection in the Home; Personal Protection Outside the Home – Level I, Level II, and Advanced; Metallic Cartridge Reloading; and a Chief Range Safety Officer. He regularly teaches classes for Michigan Concealed Pistol License qualification. Steve is an avid hunter and outdoorsman.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, Steve served as an enlisted soldier, NCO, and commissioned officer, retiring as a lieutenant colonel after over thirty-three years’ service in the active Army, Michigan Army National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserve. Trained as a Tank Crewman and Armor Officer at Ft. Knox, Kentucky, he attended numerous service schools and graduated with honors from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. He served in Germany, Latvia and Korea as well as state-side. His assignments include multiple leadership and command positions, including Commander, 1st Battalion, 126th Armor Regiment, and significant staff positions. He is a Knight of the Order of St. George, and a life member of the U.S. Cavalry and Armor Association, 126th Regimental Association, AMVETS and the Military Officers Association of America.
